Gboard: mobile typing tips

In this article, we’ll look at the features of Gboard that will help us type faster on the Google keyboard, which comes with many Android devices and can be downloaded from the Play Store for those that don’t.

Writing from a touch screen is still a difficulty for many individuals, since it’s not easy to write from a mobile’s virtual keyboard, especially when writing quickly and making mistakes while pressing the tiny keys. Touch keyboards have helped us type quickly for a long time, and they have kept getting better.

Slide to write

Swype made the swipe-to-type feature popular more than 10 years ago, and it didn’t take long for other keyboards to copy it. For many people, this is the fastest and easiest way to write on a touch screen, since they only have to slide their finger over the keys and the keyboard will figure out what word they wanted to write.

Slide to type a number or symbol

Swipe typing lets us input a number or symbol and return to the alphabetic keyboard. Slide your finger from the ‘?123’ button to the appropriate number or symbol. When we slide from that button, the keyboard shows numbers and symbols, and when we release it, we return to the alphabetic keyboard to write letters.

Configure autocorrect

Automatic correction helps us write quicker by correcting hastily-written words. In Gboard’s Spell Correction options, we may activate autocorrect. Enable ‘Undo automatic correction’ to recover the original text by pressing Backspace if autocorrect changed a correct word.

Adjust your specific recommendations

In addition to the options for automated correction, we can also locate the settings for suggestions. This gives us the ability to have the keyboard display us, in the strip at the top, the various words that we might wish to write.

Make your own abbreviations

Using the short forms of Gboard is another way to write it faster. From Dictionary Settings > Personal Dictionary > Spanish, we can add words with their abbreviations so that when we type the abbreviation, the keyboard shows us the full phrase in its suggestion strip and we can just touch it to add it.

Save to the clipboard the texts you use often.

If we notice that we have to write certain texts a lot, like an email, phone number, ID, or address, we can copy that text and fix it on the clipboard so that it is always there.

Add the number row

If we write a lot of letters with numbers and don’t want to switch back and forth between the letter and symbol keyboards, we can turn on the number row in the keyboard settings so that it is always visible.

Type with your voice

Lastly, a person who doesn’t want to write on a touch screen can use voice typing instead. Here, all we have to do is read the text out loud and say the signs for “comma,” “period,” “question mark,” and “exclamation.” For example, to write “Hello, how are you?” we have to say “Hello, interrogation, how are you?”
